Insurance
Medicare does not cover hospital or medial charges incurred outside Australia. In order to be covered for health treatment overseas it is necessary to take out insurance with private health or travel insurance providers. Contributors should seek information from private health funds as conditions regarding payment of expenses incurred overseas vary from fund to fund.
Australia has signed a number of reciprocal health care agreements, including with Finland, Italy, Malta, Netherlands, New Zealand, Sweden and the United Kingdom. Australian residents visiting these countries are generally entitled to health care under the host country's public health care system. There is no such reciprocal agreement with Japan.
