Privacy Statement

To enable the Immigration Section of the Embassy to communicate with you by email, your formal consent to this form of communication is required.

The Immigration Section as part of the Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC) is required under the Commonwealth of Australia's Privacy Act 1988 to ensure that records containing personal information are protected against unauthorised access, use, modification or disclosure. DIAC is also required to ensure that personal information is not disclosed to a person, body or agency (other than the individual concerned) unless the disclosure is specifically permitted by the Privacy Act. For example, the Privacy Act permits information to be disclosed where the individual is made aware that such information might be disclosed, or the individual concerned has consented to the disclosure. Information may also be disclosed where disclosure is necessary for reasons of an imminent threat to a person's life or health, or the enforcement of Australian law.

The Department's obligations to collect, use, protect and restrict the disclosure of personal information is set out in the Privacy Statement located on DIAC's website located at www.immi.gov.au. You can also obtain further information from the Australian Privacy Commissioner's website at www.privacy.com.au.

Before you agree to the Immigration Section of the Embassy communicating with you by email, you should understand the following:

• The transmission by you of information to us (other than through our DIAC's secure visa application site), or by us to you via your nominated email address, over the Internet or by other electronic means is not secure. The information may be viewed or altered by unauthorised persons.
• To process your application we may need to communicate with you about sensitive information, for example, health, police checks, financial viability and personal relationships.
• The Commonwealth accepts no responsibility for the security or integrity of any information sent to DIAC over the Internet or by other electronic means (other than through DIAC's secure visa application site).
